PITKIN IS THE CENTER OF IT ALL

Home to  Western Colorado University,  the city of Gunnison, Colorado has grown into an outdoor recreation travel destination. The treasure trove of public lands surrounding Gunnison are a haven for cyclists and water sports enthusiasts. Mountain biking can trace its roots back to early races held in Gunnison in the 1980s. Gunnison still retains and honors its historic tradition as a ranching town, too. 

Crested Butte, Colorado, once a sleepy former mining town without paved roads, is now a bustling little community. It has stayed true to its scrappy, quirky roots. Check out art galleries, restaurants, bars and historic buildings in downtown Crested Butte. Dozens of mountain bike trails are close enough to ride to from town.

Taylor Park, Colorado, offers a vast mountain playground managed by the US Forest Service for all types of recreational activities. Located on the west side of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, Taylor Canyon is home to Taylor Reservoir and the Taylor River. You will find great fishing, whitewater rafting, mountain bike riding and rock climbing. in the area.

Monarch Mountain is a relaxed, family-friendly ski area just East of Pitkin. Known for its deep natural snow and uncrowded slopes, Monarch offers fun for all skill levels—without the high prices or long lift lines. It’s the perfect spot for skiing and snowboarding in a laid-back, authentic Colorado mountain setting.

Just up the road from the Taylor Park Rservoir is the little town of Tincup. Tincup boasts a handful of year-round residents, with snowmobiles being the only means of access during the winter months. During the summer one can dine at Frenchys or fish or camp at Mirror Lake

St Elmo is a ghost town with no residents except happy chipmunks that will eat out of the palm of your hand! Visit the general store and walk the streets viewing the abandoned buildings that still stand today.
